Food for thought – Wilkie’s welcome a wavering political candle

Andrew Wilkie, the independent federal member for Denison, attempted to suspend standing orders today so as to make the case for 30,000 Syrian refugees to be given safe haven in Australia.

His failed attempt12001993_818747001556571_163007102_o to do so was supported by Cathy McGowan (the independent member for Indi) and naturally Adam Bandt (the Greens member for Melbourne).

This call comes after days of constant coverage via the ABC and yesterday’s candle lit vigil of roughly 10,000 Victorians at Treasury Gardens.

Frankly if we’re going to dismiss our distinct island nation’s border and accept 30,000 migrants seeking refugee status willy-nilly then these 10,000 candle holding protesters in Melbourne should be the first people called upon to house them.

Food for thought.
